beautiful people : july edition (but not really)

aka you thought you were getting all sorts of character goodies about those left behind but instead you get me talking about myself and how horrible I am at writing mwahahahahahahaha

source

just kidding.

source
(why is Joon always such a derp)

since I wanted to do a character related beautiful people, I decided to go throwback and do last months, which I didn't get to do since this was still a secret then. so yay! no author chat (I suck at writing those anyway, so this is good for everyone).

I decided to go with Matt, since he's the main character, and Lee, because she's the next closest thing to a protagonist and because she's the character who has undergone the most change. she's still changing, and that makes me feel like I don't really know her sometimes. so hopefully this post will do something to change that.

*realizes that I misspelled Lee's last name aaaaaaaaah*

what's their favourite place they've ever visited?

Matt's favourite place is the quarry, but if we're talking outside of his little town, he'd probably go with that one time they vacationed on the west coast and swam in the ocean. homeboy likes his water.

source

Lee is more of a city girl (hence the reason why Fallon drives her crazy), so she loves spending time in Seattle, which was just an hour's drive away from her old home in Washington.

source

what's one mistake they made that they learned from?

Lee gave too much of her trust to someone who ended up letting her down, and now she's reluctant to trust anyone, even her family and friends.

source

Matt turned a blind eye one too many times, and he regrets it to this very day.

source

what was their favourite subject in school? or favourite thing to learn about?

Matt, although he is a pop culture nerd, never did very well in school. I blame it mostly on the way he tended to get lost in his thoughts and important things like "hey, there's a test next week." He did enjoy classes when they got to get up and do things, though. He especially liked biology, and he's kind of interested in taking anatomy his senior year. But other than that, he has no real strong inclination toward any specific area.

source

Lee, on the other hand, is your smart cookie. She's a math whiz (how she does it I'll never know), and a giant history buff (although you'll never get her to admit it). Of course, since these two hooligans meet during the summer, Matt has no idea she's so smart and is utterly floored the first time they have a huge test by how well she does.

source

what's their favourite flower/growing thing?

Matt, as he spends a lot of time at the quarry, likes looking at the moss that grows on the walls. he thinks it looks really cool, but don't ask him to touch it. *shudders*

source

Lee loves yellow, and therefore, she loves all yellow flowers. her favourites are sunflowers, though, and marigolds.

source

have they ever made someone cry? what happened?

Matt tends to make his mother cry, just with a look or an absent remark. He also makes Lee cry when she found out that he's been lying to her this whole time.

source

Lee infuriates her mother but has never made her cry. that one time when she was seven and Linds wanted her happy meal toy, though...

source

would you consider them an unreliable or a reliable narrator?

Matt is...somewhere between. he believes in things that aren't real. he actively chooses to ignore things he'd rather not see. but he's still aware of them, and that makes him uncomfortable. so I don't really know.

source

if Lee were a narrator in this story, I definitely think she'd been a reliable narrator. but she's not, because this story is Matt's alone to tell.

source

what do they dream about at night?

Matt has nightmares about dark water and incoming storms. Lee dreams about the past.

source

they've gone out for a special meal--what would they eat?

the answer for both is pizza (they're so low maintenance oh my gosh), but while Matt's a big fan of pepperoni with lots and lots of cheese from this one place downtown, Lee is a pineapple and ham girl through and through.

source

do they have any distinguishing or unique talents?

Matt is basically a fish. Lee can lay out an argument so convincing that pretty much anyone will agree with her point of view (and did I mention that whole math whiz thing??)

source

what's at least one thing they want to do before they die?

Matt wants to hug his brother--scratch that, he'd settle for seeing his brother at least one last time.

source
Lee wants to prove herself to her mother that she's not a hopeless failure--and also live in New York.

source

and because I like this prompt from the july batch of questions....

describe your writing process in three words or a gif (or in my case, three)

source

hope y'all enjoyed this new first look at these two dear characters of mine!

those left behind : the introduction

you know the characters. you love the characters. you've told me so many times yourself.

but you don't know the story.

not yet.

***

Matthew North is trying desperately to be normal. to pretend that everything is okay. but it's not. his world is tumbling around in pieces around him, and all he can do is find himself at the bottom of the swimming pool, until the hurting stops.

Linds Poloma is trying desperately to grow up without a father, without a sister who can be there for here, without much of a mother. she feels alone, lost, and abandoned. empty spaces scare her, but that's all she seems to find lately. all she can do is fill the emptiness with noise of her own making.

Ayden Engle is trying desperately to find the grace to forgive. he doesn't want to, but that's what his parents have taught him to believe. but everyday he's reminded of what he lost, and nothing can take that pain away. all he can do is pray desperately for the strength to let go or explode.

Shiloh North is trying desperately to find the balance between moving on and enveloping herself in grief. it hurts too much to breath some days, but she bears too much responsibility to admit that. all she can do is sit and wait, hoping for a miracle of some sort.

Colt Trelawney is trying desperately to fill a blank space with something, anything. he can't wrap his mind around losing someone he thought he would always have. all he can do is fight--fight every bit of complacency and fear in his life, even if it resides deep within his best friend.

Lee Poloma is trying desperately to understand how people can stand to let go--of anything, grief, pain, guilt, hate. she hides behind a mask of thunder and lightning, covering up the secret scars within her. all she can do is walk in the dark, trying to find her own way, no matter where it takes her.

Jonathon North isn't trying at all.
